September 1779 - Spain entered the American War of Independence and secretly planned a campaign to seize West Florida from the British.

After quickly capturing Fort Bute and a few other small posts, Bernardo de Galvez arrived at Baton Rouge where the British built a large redoubt. The Spanish army was large but contained untrained troops and many were sick from the heat. The Spanish need a glorious victory and think Galvez is their man.
