From 1880 to 1914, relive the colonial conquests in Africa through one of the six European nations tasked with extending their influence across the continent. Smooth talk and backstabbing will be essential in this "Diplomacy-like" game.
Objective of the game :
AFRICA 1880 is a negotiation game that simulates the struggle of European powers for the colonization of African lands from 1880 to 1914. Players must explore the continent to develop territories, build colonies, and also deceive their opponents to seize territories developed by others. The winner is the player with the most colonies at the end of the game.
Gameplay :
Each player chooses a European country to represent throughout the game (Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, France, Italy, or the Netherlands) and places one of their diplomatic relations tokens in each of the other countries' embassies. Then, in turn, each player places one of their presences on one of the coastal territories.
The game is played over eight rounds. The first round takes place in 1880, the second in 1885, and so on. Each round consists of five successive phases:
1) Diplomatic action: all players have eight minutes to freely discuss matters amongst themselves in order to convince the others to become their allies. Promises are, of course, only binding on those who believe them.
2) Drafting orders: each player secretly writes three types of orders on their player sheet. They note these in the column corresponding to the current round.
Each player writes:
- One order for each of their presences on the map
- One order to land on a coastal territory when possible
- Their diplomatic relations with the other countries.
3) Reading and executing orders
4) Conflict resolution: This phase determines which presences remain or are removed from the map.
- In all territories containing two presences: a country's presence is removed if it has declared an alliance with the other country present and the latter has declared war on it.
- In all territories containing three, four, five, or six presences: a country's presence is removed if it has more declarations of war than it has declarations of alliance from the other countries present in that territory.
- Following the same principle, a presence remains if it has as many declarations of war as it has declarations of alliance from the other countries present in that territory.
5) Colony construction: A territory permanently becomes a colony if the territory is fully developed and if at least one presence occupies it (if several countries are present, they must all be allied with each other). End of the game
The last turn of the game is either that of 1914, or that during which the last available colony token is placed.
