Donnerschlag: Escape from Stalingrad is a two-player game that is played in one session. It is more of a game than a simulation and is intended to provide great interactivity and replayability.

The situation

From December 12 to 23, 1942, "Unternehmen Wintergewitter" is underway. This was the code name for a relief attack led by the Heeresgruppe Don to free the 6th Army trapped in Stalingrad.

The Axis formations entered with 50,000 men and 250 tanks, while the strength of the Soviet formations would be about three times greater. For the enterprise to have any chance of success, the encircling troops had to escape and meet the advancing Axis troops. The escape had to be precisely coordinated with the advance of the relief troops and had to begin at the "Donnerschlag" signal. The breakthrough was never ordered and the troops in Stalingrad could never be relieved. This sealed their fate.

Players will recreate this episode, with the Axis attempting to establish and secretly reach a meeting point, freeing the 6th Army, while the Soviets attempt to prevent this outcome.

The scale

A hexagon represents 4 km (2.5 miles) of terrain from one side to the other.
Each turn represents a period of 1 to 2 days.
Combat units are primarily Brigades and Regiments for the Soviets and Romanians, Battalions and Divisions for the Germans.
