Pamper your beloved dogs and get rewarded!
The player furthest from the starting player places the guard dog token next to one of the rows or columns, then the game is ready.
On a turn, choose one of your turn cards, rotating it as you wish, and then collect cards from the 3x3 grid that match the pattern on the turn card, for example, common polyomino shapes. You can take at most one card in the row or column under the protection of the watchdog. You can play and put away the cards before and after collecting the cards from the grid. What do you do with what you collect?
- The watchdog cards are immediately placed in front of you. Good dog!
- Food cards are exchanged for one of four types of food.
- Adoption cards go into your hand, and you can trade two of them for a rescued dog, which gets a special power or endgame bonus.
- Favorite Things cards are dog toys that are more valuable when you collect them in sets.
- Training cards can be swiped from under a dog for bonus points, or you can swap multiple cards to get a new turn, giving you more opportunities to take cards each turn.
- Walking cards are worth bonus points when placed under a dog.
- Bone cards give you a bonus for fed dogs if you collect enough of them.
- Trait cards give permanent power and an endgame bonus, but you must attach them to a dog on the turn you claim them; otherwise, you usually must discard several cards.
When the "End of Game" card appears in the deck, you end the round so that each player has the same number of turns, then keep score.
Each dog has a dietary requirement. If you meet this requirement, the dog and all its features and folded cards will be worth points. On the other hand, if you don't give the dog the right type and amount of food, you score -2 points for that dog and ignore all the folded cards that would have otherwise earned you points (don't let your dogs go hungry!). The player who scores the most points is the ultimate dog lover!

Ce jeu a été joué et recommandé par La tuile de jeu, voici son avis :
Dog Lover ajoute plus de complexité et un peu plus de profondeur comparé à son grand frère, Cat Lady. Avoir les deux jeux dans sa collection peut relever du doublon. Uniquement disponible en anglais, Dog Lover vous permettra de jouer les bons samaritains en adoptant des chiens du refuge aux personnalités uniques !
Le jeu n'est pas exempt de défauts. Outre la barrière de la langue, on retrouve quelques soucis d'édition, comme par exemple des cubes de nourriture aux couleurs trop proches ; il ne sera pas rare de confondre différents types de nourriture. C'est une petite boîte mais les cartes prennent rapidement de la place sur la table de jeu. L'interaction entre les joueurs est quasi inexistante, chacun jouant dans son propre coin.
Vos premières parties seront certainement un peu chaotiques, la faute à sa mécanique de jeu un peu lourde. Mais une fois comprise, le jeu se révèle très plaisant à jouer avec une pléthore de façons de scorer.
Doté de magnifiques illustrations qui peuvent certainement diviser, je conseille cependant de jouer uniquement à deux pour avoir un temps de jeu respectable et éviter certaines longueurs. Il est regrettable de ne pas avoir fourni de mode solo, ce type de jeu s'y prêtant bien.
Finalement, vous pourrez acheter Dog Lover pour deux raisons : soit vous ne trouvez personne avec qui jouer sur BGA (car oui, le jeu est disponible sur la plateforme), soit vous êtes un collectionneur aguerri et souhaitez, après les chats, avoir la version avec les chiens.
