Award-winning games

Every year, game awards are presented to various board games, providing a prime opportunity to highlight the work of designers, illustrators, and publishers. While the As d'Or and the Spiel des Jahres are the two most prestigious awards in the board game world, there are many others, more specialized, that focus on specific aspects of the game, such as the Diamant d'Or for so-called eurogames, the Coupe des Duellistes for two-player games, the Sabliers d'Or for game previews, and the Graal d'Or, the Grog d'Or, and the Prix Rôliste for role-playing games. At the FIJ (Cannes International Games Festival), the As d'Or (Golden Ace) is a prize awarded to a game for which the members of the jury have been seduced by an innovative mechanics, an approach from the designer, publisher, the beauty of the material, the depth of the subject, the intelligence of the product and quite simply their own pleasure.

The Spiel des Jahres is one of the most renowned awards in the board game world. Founded in 1978 in Germany, its influence now extends beyond the German borders. The jury for the award is made up of journalists and experts. They evaluate games on the basis of originality, rules, playability, presentation and game mechanics.

The nominated games are usually announced during the month of May and the prize is awarded in June or July at the latest.

The Deutscher SpielePreis is the second largest prize awarded to board games in Germany, after the Spiel des Jahres. The prize is awarded by critics and readers of the magazine "Pöppel-Revue". It is announced at the Essen Game Fair in October.

The Golden Diamond is an award organized since 2015 by a group of passionate gamers and lovers of good big games, often called "German-style".
This award highlights and rewards games whose format does not always allow them to apply for one of the (many) other current awards.

To be included in the list of pre-selected games, games must meet certain criteria: they must be released within the year, not be a re-release, be a eurogame, be an expert game and have a high replayability.

Discover the games awarded by the Tric Trac d'Or, an award issued every year by the Tric Trac website. Awarded since 2001, the prize is now one of the most expected awards in the gaming world. The winners are usually revealed at the end of the year after an open vote from the website community. For the 2021 edition, the award included different categories: Tric Trac d'Or, Tric Trac d'Or Expert, Tric Trac d'Or Initiate, Tric Trac d'Or Duo, Tric Trac d'Or Family and Tric Trac d'Or Child.

Since 2006, the Golden Geek Awards have been presented each year to the best games according to the community of users of the BoardGameGeek (BGG) website. The awards consist of three stages:

Nominations: these take place over a month or so, during which the community nominates the games released over the past year.

Voting: this takes place over a three-week period, using the Schulze method.

Results: these are announced on the BGG website and social media. Nominees and winners are authorized to display the Golden Geek Award label on their website and game packaging.

The Graal d'Or is a prize awarded to role-playing games during the Festival International du Jeu de Cannes. Organized by the GR.A.A.L (GRoupement Azuréen des Associations Ludiques), the first edition was held during the FIJ 2019.

The prize aims to reward the best RPGs released during the school year preceding the ceremony and wishes to include in the discussions all the actors of the role-playing game in order to federate the whole community.

Each year the members of the Grog (Guide du Rôliste Galactique) reward the role-playing game that has had the greatest impact on the international rolistic-playing landscape, among a selection of 12 games, each game being part of the "Game of the Month" selection of the year.

Créé à l'initiative de Rôliste TV et réunissant des professionnels du milieu ludique et des media rôliste, le Prix Rôliste récompense les meilleurs jeu de rôle de l'année répartis dans différentes catégories.

The Festival Ludique International de Parthenay (FLIP) rewards at each of its editions the best games published during the past year, based on criteria such as the originality, the quality of the edition, the playful interest or the game mechanisms.

Les Sabliers d'Or is a game prize that takes place online, on the Un Monde de Jeux channel, during a whole week. After the presentation of the selected games, the participants vote via a Google Form to indicate whether or not they would like to add this game to their library. The game with the highest rating wins the prize.

The Duelist Cup is an annual award for the best two-person games. The award is presented in june et july at an online event highlighting all the two-person game releases of the past year.

Le Mensa Select est une récompense délivrée chaque année depuis 1990 aux cinq meilleurs jeux de réflexion. Le prix est décerné lors des Mind Games par les membres de l'organisation internationale Mensa.

Prize awarded at the Finist'aire de Jeux Festival. This award highlights the work of the illustrators, who are so important in immersion and the pleasure of playing.

The Golden GeekLette Award, often also called GGA, recognizes the game that the GeekLette blog editorial team enjoyed the most.

"Sélection Des Ludothécaires" is an annual event highlighting five games and toys favored by toy librarians and chosen for their play value, originality, and ethical considerations. Voters are toy librarians who are members of the ALF. The SDL comprises five categories: Skill-Building Games, Symbolic Play, Construction Toys, Rule-Based Games, and Video Games.
