Commands & Colors Samurai Battles a game by Richard Borg

Simple rules

The rules of Commands & Colors: Samurai Battles allow players to represent important engagements in Japanese history. The battles, included in the scenario booklet, focus on the historical deployment of forces and important terrain features at the scale of the game system. The scale of play is flexible and varies from battle to battle. In some scenarios, an infantry unit may represent an entire clan of soldiers, while in others, a unit may represent just a few brave warriors.

Command cards direct movement and create a "fog of war", presenting players with many interesting challenges and opportunities, while combat dice resolve battles quickly and efficiently. Honor & Fortune game mechanics will require players to maintain a balance between these two important game elements. Dragon cards add an element of suspense and surprise that can alter the rules and instantly change the course of a battle. The battlefield tactics you'll need to execute to achieve victory, however, conform remarkably well to the strengths and limitations of the different types of Japanese units, their weapons, the battlefield and the written history.

An accomplished version

So what makes GMT's Commands & Colors:Samurai Battles from GMT so great! In a word: more! C&C: Samurai Battles by GMT has more scenarios, more units to deploy, additional Japanese unit types, a battlefield full of units and terrain. And there's even more expansion material already waiting in the wings.

Firstly, there are more units and more unit types in the game. Yes, it will take some time to apply the stickers to all the blocks, but that's child's play compared to the time it took to assemble the figurines. Once finished, the blocks are very durable and easy to store.

Secondly, the battlefield is presented on a rigid card. It's not really bigger in that it still measures 11 hexes deep by 12 hexes wide, but there are plenty of terrain tiles, including new terrain types, fences, ramparts, castle walls and more.

Third - more scenarios, which will undoubtedly be the most important feature for all those who own and enjoy Zvezda's previous version of Samurai Battles. There are now almost 40 in the box!
