In the game 1989 - Dawn of Freedom, the communist camp, seeking to maintain its grip on the Eastern Bloc countries, opposes the democratic player and the democratic revolutions that emerged in 1989.

The game system is almost identical to that of Twilight Struggle: the game is driven by cards that can be played as historical events or for their action points, which allow players to carry out various operations, such as strengthening their influence in a key sector.
