It's 2179 and the future of the Earth looks bleak.
The use of electric vehicles, solar technology and other energy-saving solutions has slowed the problem, but it's hard to reverse the long-term abuse of the planet by previous generations. Most Earthlings seem to have given up hope, but a group of optimistic explorers are heading for Mars, which some believe could change their destiny.
In their quest for knowledge, these explorers hope that understanding the disappearance of extraterrestrial populations can help them prevent, or at least slow down, the rapid deterioration of the Earth. They'll need to replicate Martian technologies, translate their languages and avoid too much radiation along the way, in order to achieve maximum prestige and save the Earth as they know it.
In Ruins of Mars, players compete to develop their arsenal of knowledge, trying to understand the languages of the ancient civilizations that colonized Mars and turned it into a hub of economic activity. The game is played on a board consisting of five locations and eleven common action tiles, which are randomly arranged on the board as evenly as possible
Each turn, you choose one of the slots, possibly paying to move an action tile from an adjacent slot to the active slot, perform the slot's action - the effect of which will be based on the tiles below that space - possibly replicating the alien technology by paying resources and adding it to your board for personal use, then reassign the action tiles in the active slot in mancala fashion.
Over the course of the game, you learn Martian languages and rediscover and study their technologies, which come in three levels and several classifications, and give you special abilities. Along the way, you risk being irradiated by various actions, and you'll want to get rid of them if possible so as not to lose points in the final ranking, which is mainly based on the technologies you've assembled and your mastery of the languages.
