The clay marble, find the marble from your childhood with this artisanal creation. This ball is made in coucourdes, machines from 1940

Manufactured in Congrier in Mayenne, Billes en May' is the last European manufacturer of this traditional ball. You can find all the colors and even speckled ones!

How do you make a clay marble?

The start is a simple grain of sand, which we will put in the bowl. The coucourd turns quite slowly at first, then a mixture of lime and cement (one of the traditional recipes) is added, with a little humidity. To make a series of beads, 6000 in one go, it takes around 7 hours of work spread over 1 and a half months. Several steps are necessary:

  • the core: 3/4 mm ball, 1 hour of work, which is left to dry for 1 week
  • The peppercorn: approximately 6 mm ball, 2 hours of work, which is left to dry for approximately 2 weeks
  • the ball: 14 to 16 mm ball, 4 hours of work, which is left to dry for approximately 2 weeks.
Each step requires being in front of the machine, to check the speed, humidity, smoothness. Then we arrive at the finishing stages:

  • Diameter sorting: Passage through a tool to sort the balls to have a diameter greater than 14 mm, 1 hour of sorting
  • Cleaning: Passage through a concrete mixer to “clean” the surface layer and smooth it before painting. This step also allows you to remove the most fragile ones that break.
  • Painting: Painting the beads with the barrel painting method. This method allows you to paint 12 kilos of beads at the same time. The paint complies with game and toy standards, any color can be achieved.
So you know (almost) everything about making the ball... and I still keep a few secrets! All this happens in our artisanal workshop, in Congrier in Mayenne.
