Develop your civilization by balancing the consumption of time and wealth.

"Gentes" is the Latin plural word for large groups of human beings (e.g., tribes, nations, peoples; singular: "people"). In this game, players take on the role of an ancient people trying to develop by building monuments and colonizing or founding new cities in the Mediterranean.

The game is played in six rounds, each consisting of two phases: the action phase and the settlement phase. There are three eras - turns 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 - with new monument cards coming into play at the beginning of turns 1, 3 and 5.

Each player has a personal play mat with a time track for action markers and sand time markers. During the action phase of a round, players play in clockwise order, taking one action per round. Each action requires an Action Marker from the main board that is placed on the Time Track. Depending on the information on the action marker, you must also pay money or take sand timers that are placed on the time track. When you have no more free space on your time track, you must pass for the rest of the round.

Therefore, the number of actions per player in a single round can vary significantly if, for example, you choose double sand timers instead of two single ones or if you take action markers that require more money but fewer sand timers. Single sand timers are dropped in the put away phase, while double sand timers are flipped to become single sand timer markers and remain for another round. It is essential to generate additional actions using the specific functions of the monuments in your display and the cities you have built. Cities are expensive, but they create advantages at the end of each round or provide new options for performing an action without acquiring an action marker, earning only a sand time marker instead.

Try to have a steady income to avoid wasting actions to take money. Pay attention to the common card display, which is new in each game, as the monument cards are randomly shuffled in the Era I, II, and III packs. Collect identical achievement symbols on the cards to receive increased victory points for a set of symbols. Build cities to expand your options!
