Megisteus (from the Greek for "maximise" or "greatest") was a Greek warrior of the Persian and Peloponnesian Wars. He wore a linen breastplate (linothorax), a bronze Corinthian-style helmet with a distinctive red crest. His shield was depicted as a gorgon (often used as a symbol of protection), and he carried a short sword called a "Xiphos," a style that would be in use until the Hellenistic period.
