In "Kingsburg," players are lords sent by the king to create new borders.
The game lasts five years, for a total of 20 rounds.
Each year, there are three production seasons to gather resources, build foundations, and train troops. During the fourth season, winter, all players must fight an invading army.
Each player must face the invaders: this is not a cooperative game.
In this game, those with the worst dice rolls will take first place to play first and win any ties.
Resources for building structures and troops are gathered by influencing the King's advisors.
Players place their influence dice on members of the Council.
The player with the lowest influence dice rolls will be the first to choose how to spend their influence, in order to balance the dice rolls.
Even with very unlucky rolls, a clever player can return from the Council with a good number of resources and/or soldiers.
