Kuldhara, once magnificent, was a prosperous village in northern India. However, when its grand vizier began imposing cruel and unrealistic demands on its inhabitants, threatening to destroy the village, they decided to raze Kuldhara themselves. The buildings burned, its riches scattered in the sand, and its inhabitants disappeared into the desert without a trace. Today, Kuldhara is considered a ghost town, where its former inhabitants wander at night as specters... However, many of its treasures are still lost in the surrounding desert.
A complete game of Kuldhara lasts 4 rounds, which corresponds to a full “day.” Each round, players replenish their water supply, which they use to perform various actions, such as traveling with their camels through the desert, digging up gems in the ruins, and bringing their gems back to base camp.
Each turn is quick and simple, with each player performing only one or two actions before beginning to organize the stones collected on their personal workbench to make jewelry. When the active player has created the pattern shown on the jewelry card, they can craft it, exchange the gems for the card, and earn points. In addition, some cards may grant “protection tiles” that allow gems to be reused multiple times. So, with a little luck and a good strategy, a player can even craft 2 or 3 pieces of jewelry at once!
As the rounds progress, the position of the sun also changes, which means that the cost of travel routes will vary throughout the game. You will therefore need to plan your water consumption carefully in order to craft the most powerful amulets using well-placed combinations on your personal workbench. In the end, the player with the most points wins the game.
Kuldhara also offers a dedicated solo mode, with a custom board and card set for Kadhan, a specter from Kuldhara. His turns are easy to play and offer several levels of difficulty. They almost always end in close games where the last turn is truly decisive!
