A game of Libertalia takes place over 3 Journeys.

In the world of Galecrest, sky pirates sail the winds in search of adventure, treasure and glory. As an admiral, you command a crew of sailors from different backgrounds... but so do your opponents who sail on other ships in the pirate fleet.

At the beginning of each Voyage, players get an identical set of 6 Character cards. Each day during the Voyage, players choose, at the same time, 1 Character to play from their hand. The chosen Characters are placed on the Island, from the lowest to the highest level.

Players activate the Day skills of these Characters in ascending order, then activate the Dusk skills and a selection of Loot in descending order. At this point, Characters join each player's Ship. Finally, the Night skills of the Characters, who are in the Boats, are activated.

At the end of the Voyage, players activate, if applicable, the characters' Anchor skills and score points according to their Loot and Doubles tokens. They then discard those Characters, Booty and Doubles tokens, keeping only those Characters in their hand that have not been played. At the end of the third Voyage, players reveal their final score to determine who will go down in history as the richest pirate.
