European powers fight for colonial hegemony in 18th century.

Colonial 1700-1800 is a strategic card game for 1 to 5 players that recreates the struggle between the European powers to preserve their colonial empires in the 18th century. The basic game faces France and Great Britain, although the powers of Spain, the Netherlands and Portugal can also be involved (add-on).

The game combines eurogame type mechanics (set collection, hand management, resource production) with other wargame type mechanics (direct confrontation between players, troop recruitment, territorial control of colonies, resolution of battles).

The game in its standard version is played over 5 turns per player, where you must defend your initial positions, encourage the production of export goods in the colonies (by building plantations and other buildings) and recruit troops to expand your colonial empire across up to 4 different theaters of operations: North America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia (the Spain add-on includes a 5th theater of operations: South America).

Throughout the game you must properly manage your player board: recruit reinforcements and acquire buildings, imprison enemy generals defeated in battle (and demand ransom for them), fill your treasury for the expenses you will need in the next turn, as well as How to achieve in your warehouse the combinations of goods that can bring you the most gold.

You will also be able to persuade other monarchs and local powers to join your side in the war and grant you benefits (military, economic or diplomatic). Some will not join you, but their intervention will be enough to thwart the plans of the enemy powers.

On the other hand, obtaining gold is essential in the game, since tactical cards are a powerful tool in the hands of players to turn the tide in a battle, take a colony through a coup d’état or obtain all kinds of advantages. Each player draws 1 tactical card per turn, but players can purchase more tactics in the card market, whose evolution must be monitored. At the end of the player’s turn, the cheapest card is discarded, the rest move to the left, and a new tactic is revealed for the cost of 4 gold.

Players have many strategies to achieve victory:
  • Will you trust your best generals and powerful line infantry, even if they are expensive to pay, to confront the cream of your country against the enemy forces?
  • Will you choose to form cheap forces based on allied natives and mercenaries capable of hitting unexpectedly?
  • Will you focus your efforts on gaining the political support of other monarchs to provide you with military aid? There are those who prefer that others put boots on the ground.
  • Will you economically suffocate your rivals by using privateers and plundering enemy colonies?
  • Will you decide to focus on the construction of buildings and the production of goods in the colonies?
