In 1734, Michel-Étienne Turgot, then head of the Paris municipality as provost of merchants, decided to promote the image of Paris by commissioning a new map of the city. He entrusted Louis Bretez, a member of the Academy of Painting and Sculpture and professor of perspective, with the task of measuring and drawing a map of Paris and its suburbs. The contract required precise observation and a very faithful reproduction. Bretez was given permission to enter hotels, houses, and gardens. He worked on it for two years (1734-1736). The result is one of the most sumptuous images of Paris ever created.
