Jacek Yerka, born Jacek Ryszard Kowalski in 1952 in Toruń. Based on a precise imaging technique modeled after the old masters (Jan van Eyck, Hieronymus Bosch), but above all on his own limitless imagination, Yerka has created his own surreal world. It is full of symbolism, detail, and references to fairy tales, mythology, and surreal dreams. His style, which combines surrealist compositions with detailed realism, is commonly referred to as "fantastic realism." His work is especially admired by fantasy enthusiasts; in 1995, he was the recipient of the prestigious World Fantasy Award for Best Artist at the World Fantasy Convention.
