While the avant-garde and then abstraction left their mark on America, Edward Hopper (1882–1967) cultivated a realism that went against the grain. Beginning in the 1930s, this painter became famous for exhibiting melancholic canvases inspired by the American way of life, of which he offered a disillusioned vision. His work contains a symbolic depth beneath the surface of the mundane. A prolific artist in both painting and graphic art, Hopper brought to life a silent metaphysical realism, with a muted and unstable perfection, much like a Hitchcockian drama.

Step into the enigmatic world of Edward Hopper with the Nighthawks puzzle, where a late-night dinner becomes a stage for human isolation and introspection. Hopper’s mastery in capturing light and psychological tension is evident in this painting, inviting you to piece together his work.

Nighthawks: a famous painting—perhaps the best-known in American art—this scene tells less of a story than a moment, captured on the spot and seemingly frozen in time. Four figures occupy the space of this diner, both enclosed and open to the city, in the dead of night. Though they touch one another or exchange glances, they nevertheless convey a sense of profound loneliness and weariness. Around them, everything is empty. The painter observes the scene from outside the restaurant, standing back. Painted with a wide-angle perspective, this work is as reminiscent of photography as it is of cinema.
