The Norwegian Edvard Munch (1863 - 1944) is one of the most famous Scandinavian painters. Between fashionable symbolism and nascent expressionism, the author of the famous Scream is a painter of the soul and emotions. His pessimism is not far from the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer and especially Friedrich Nietzsche, as well as from Mallarméan poetry. In his works, he approaches themes related to death, anguish and pain with more lyricism than realism. In the spirit of what has been called "fin de siècle decadence", Munch's work is profoundly biographical and one of the most singular of the Symbolist movement.
