There is no minimum age for discovering board games. Starting early allows children to enjoy the fun for longer and supports their development at every stage. Philibert offers a selection of children’s board games from recognised publishers in the sector such as Djeco, Haba and Gigamic, for ages ranging from one to nine years.
For children aged one to three, early learning games offer a gentle introduction to the world: recognising animals, colours, shapes and sounds. The components are designed to be handled by little hands, with no complex rules or pressure to win.
From the age of 3 or 4, games become more complex and start to resemble board games intended for adults. Young players learn to devise a strategy to win and become familiar with the elements specific to board games: following the rules, rolling dice, and using cards and tokens. The concepts of winning and losing begin to emerge – two ideas that take time for a child to grasp.
When it comes to learning, it is recommended to start with cooperative games, in which children play together against the game rather than against one another. This approach makes it easier for them to accept collective defeat before moving on to competitive games and their mechanics of direct opposition.
A child aged 9 or 10 who is already familiar with board games can play almost any board game, with the exception of those with themes that are too dark or violent, which are still unsuitable for their age.
Philibert offers a selection of children’s board games categorised by age: 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, 5 years, 6 years, 7 years, 8 years and 9 years. This classification makes it easy to find a game suited to a child’s level of understanding and abilities, whether it’s their first early-learning game or an introduction to strategic gameplay.
