The game depicts the Winter War, which took place from November 30, 1939, to March 13, 1940.

The Finnish defense plan was based on the belief that the Soviet army would concentrate its main offensive on the Karelian Isthmus. An offensive was also expected in the northwest and north of Lake Ladoga, where the road network was relatively good. This area is the focus of Stalin's Lost Chance.

Two divisions of the Finnish IV Corps were stationed there. North of Ilomantsi, the entire long eastern border was defended only by detached battalions and border companies when the war broke out.

The Soviet Union's 8th Army, consisting of six divisions and an armored brigade, had grouped one or two divisions on each road leading from the northeast to the northwest. Its mission was to execute a flanking maneuver around the northern shore of Lake Ladoga in order to strike the rear of the Mannerheim Line.

This is the ninth game in the Three Crowns Games WWII Battle Series.
