American airborne division
Having fought in the battles over Sicily in 1943, and then in the landing operations in June 1944, the American airborne divisions were withdrawn from the front line to rest and re-establish themselves.
Equipped with the new M-1943 green for their uniforms, the divisions which included the 101st 'Screaming Eagles' and the 82nd 'All American' would be used by the Allied High Command during Operation Market Garden - an ambitious plan to open a corridor through Holland by parachuting in several American, British and Polish airborne divisions to take main bridges.
