Players lead one of four asymmetrical frog factions vying for control of a modular pond, with each faction having its own starting deck and unique ability. The goal is to deploy your frog tokens onto the lily pads to accumulate victory points, while preventing rival factions from doing the same.
The game’s originality lies in its deliberate contrast between a cute and a biting aesthetic: behind the colorful illustrations lies a highly interactive area-control game, where the “Long Fwooogs”—the game’s iconic units—serve both as respawn points and prime targets for opponents seeking high scores. This Deluxe Edition replaces all cardboard components with wooden pieces and a custom-fit storage insert.
On their turn, a player uses the cards in their hand to deploy frogs onto the board, purchase new cards from among the more than fifty frogs available on the market, or recruit Frog Heroes who grant permanent passive abilities to their faction.
The hibernation system allows players to temporarily set aside certain cards to refine their deck as the game progresses—a mechanic that sets Pond apart from more traditional deck-building games. When tokens from two factions land on the same space, a battle is resolved using the custom dice included in the box, with cards in hand potentially influencing the outcome.
Victory points are earned primarily by controlling water lilies and capitalizing on opportunities presented by battles, particularly against opposing “Long Fwooogs,” which yield substantial rewards when defeated.
The game ends after a number of turns determined by the rules, and the faction that has accumulated the most victory points wins control of the pond. This constant tension between territorial expansion and taking risks in combat shapes the entire game until its conclusion.
