The last pharaoh of ancient Egypt, Cleopatra is one of the most famous and enigmatic queens in history. She is famous for her beauty and for her love affair with the Roman warlords. She took her life being poisoned by the bite of an asp, rather than being paraded through the streets of Rome as the mistress of defeated Mark Anthony.

Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Emperor of India. Victoria has reigned for sixty-three years, longer than any previous British Monarch and has become a national icon. It remains the most prestigious military award.

A physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity, Marie Curie was the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris and win a Nobel Prize. Her achievements include the radioactive isolation of isotopes and the discovery of two elements, Polonium and Radium. Among her many honours, an Asteroid, 7000 Curie, was named after her.

A great warrior queen of the Iceni in England, Boadicea led a rebellion against the scandalous behaviour of the Romans following the death of her husband Presutagus. She is famous for riding in her chariot encouraging British rebel forces in battle against the Romans, but her valiant exhortations failed and the British were defeated.

Florence Nightingale (1820-1910)

Founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale was famous during the Crimean War. There, she organized teams of nurses, who became known as 'The Lady with the Lamp' for caring for the wounded at night. After the war, she founded the first nursing school in London and helped to improve health care for all sections of British society.
