A dive into unspeakable horror
This third volume of the H.P. Lovecraft collection features The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, a true pillar of the work of the master from Providence. Unique for its structure as a complete novel rather than a short story collection, this narrative follows the slow descent into madness of Charles Dexter Ward, a young man fascinated by his ancestor, the mysterious Joseph Curwen. Lovecraft unfolds a gothic and scientific horror that defies the boundaries of reason. The volume features:
- A unified and rigorous translation by David Camus, breathing new life into the author's complex style.
- A rich critical apparatus, including contextual notes and essential supplementary texts to understand the genesis of the work.
- Editorial quality (Mnémos/Bragelonne editions) that values both substance and form with a polished presentation.
The plot of the novel
The story begins with the disappearance of Ward, whose mental health had deteriorated after discovering compromising family archives. The narrative, led by his physician Dr. Willett, explores the shadows of Providence and the occult past that seems to want to return to life through the young man. As the investigation progresses, the reader discovers:
- A heavy atmosphere, rooted in the historical and geographical reality of New England.
- An exploration of themes dear to Lovecraft: the cursed genealogy, forbidden incantations, and the return of ancestral powers.
- A crescendo of psychological and supernatural terror that makes this novel one of the masterpieces of fantasy literature.
A must-have for every library
More than just a collection, this volume is an invitation to explore the depths of Lovecraftian imagination. The series, praised for its faithfulness and excellence, is aimed at both newcomers and seasoned readers seeking the definitive version of the master's writings. The book itself, through its attention to typography and layout, testifies to the seriousness and quality of the Mnémos editions. It is the ideal book for anyone wishing to confront, page after page, the mystery surrounding the case of Charles Dexter Ward.
