You are in command of a US carrier strike group in the North Atlantic during the Cold War, facing the Soviet fleet in the 1980s.
As commander of this carrier strike group, you will have to complete various missions in the North Sea while facing Soviet naval and air forces. As the Cold War escalates into open conflict, you may be called upon to secure the Denmark Strait, support a special force in the Arctic, attack a Soviet naval base in Murmansk, escort reinforcements to NATO's northern flank in Norway, conduct an amphibious landing behind Warsaw Pact lines in the Baltic Sea, provide air support on the central front in West Germany, or hunt down an out-of-control Soviet missile submarine.
Carrier Battle Group – Deluxe Edition is a single-player game in which you face off against an autonomous game system. Your objective: complete missions generated randomly by drawing “Mission Orders” tokens. You will have to manage a US Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, its air group, and its escort ships, while facing Soviet ships, aircraft, and missiles controlled by the game system. As commander of the carrier group, from the bridge of your aircraft carrier, you will face unexpected events, opportunities, and threats, represented by “Incident” tokens.
Air and naval operations are represented in great detail, while other American and Soviet actions are handled in a more abstract manner. The alert level—which reflects the Soviet command's awareness of your presence—influences your chances of enemy encounters. Once contact is established, combat is resolved according to a specific tactical procedure. A scenario ends when you achieve your objective. Each scenario can be played independently or linked to others in a complete campaign. Optional rules allow for multiplayer games, with each player controlling a different aspect of the American force.
Carrier Battle Group – Deluxe Edition is an expanded version of the game originally published in Modern War No. 14. This edition features new graphics for the map and counters, a rigid game board, updated rules, new game aids, and a strategic analysis article on the campaign.
