The Civil War was the deadliest conflict and a defining moment in U.S. history. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that battles were fought using tactics inherited from the Napoleonic era, but with much more modern and lethal weapons. In nearly four years of war, approximately 700,000 Americans were killed or wounded in combat, with an additional 400,000 soldiers dying of disease.
The game mechanics are based on the acclaimed Borodino/Napoleon at Waterloo system. Terrain plays a crucial role, ranging from gentle agricultural hills to wooded and wild areas. Many battles will see control of key positions change hands several times. Rules for night turns add an extra dimension. A set of standard rules applies to all games, while each battle has its own exclusive rules, historical setups, and player and designer notes—faithfully preserved from the original SPI editions.
This Deluxe Edition features all-new artwork, double-sided game boards, enlarged counters, player aids, numerous optional rules from other editions, and new counters and markers for variants that appeared in Moves and Strategy & Tactics magazines. Rediscover these classics from the golden age of SPI and replay the famous battles that decided the fate of a divided nation.
