Roxane is a card game inspired by Cyrano de Bergerac. Players take on the roles of young suitors—known as “Cyranos”—who compete in poetry and bravery in Roxane’s garden to win her heart.
The goal is to compose the most beautiful verses, collect tokens of affection such as roses or letters, and prove one’s courage in fencing duels against the other suitors. The game’s originality lies in Roxane’s own movement through the garden as the game progresses: her position continually changes her preferences regarding romance and poetry, forcing players to constantly adapt their strategy and their hand of cards.
Setup involves placing the board representing Roxane’s garden, selecting the customizable poetry tracks that will determine the game’s scoring conditions, and dealing the text cards to the players.
On their turn, each player can use their cards in two ways: play them for their immediate effect—such as triggering a duel or collecting influence tokens—or keep them in hand to compose a complete verse that will only be scored at the end of the game. Fencing duels allow players to gain advantages over their rivals, while Roxane’s movement through the garden periodically redistributes the value of the various sought-after forms of poetry.
The game ends after a number of rounds determined by the rules, once the poetry and romance tracks have been sufficiently filled. Players then tally the points earned from the verses they’ve composed, the rose and letter tokens they’ve collected, as well as bonuses tied to Roxane’s final position in the garden, which favors certain types of poetry over others.
