November 1, 1755, Lisbon suffers an earthquake of magnitude 8.5 on the Richter scale followed by a tsunami and three days of fires. The city was completely destroyed.
The Marquis of Pombal, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Prime Minister at the time, was charged by the King with the task of rebuilding Lisbon. On December 4, 1755, a little more than a month after the disaster, the chief engineer of the kingdom, Manuel da Maie, presented the plans to rebuild the city. Maia presented five options including abandoning Lisbon, rebuilding by recycling the ruins, widening the streets or completely rebuilding the city. Finally, the new plan proposed to completely raze the Baixa neighborhood and rebuild the streets without constraints.
