Paperback 10th Anniversary, the word deck-building game
Paperback 10th Anniversary is the anniversary edition of the word deck-building game designed by Tim Fowers and published by Fowers Games. Players take on the role of aspiring novelists: starting from a basic deck of letter cards, they form words whose value lets them buy more powerful new letters or point cards ("Fame"). Most letters have an ability that triggers when used in a word, cleverly blending vocabulary with engine building. This 10th anniversary edition adds new artwork and several brand-new game modes.
How to play Paperback 10th Anniversary
On their turn, each player forms a word with the cards in their hand: they earn money to buy cards and score Fame points. The anniversary edition enriches the experience with several variants: Genre mode (tech trees / player powers), the Deadline variant (drafting and simultaneous play to speed up games), the solo Spy mode (against an automated opponent), and the Typos mechanic (grabbing a card just out of reach at the cost of a hard-to-use "typo" letter). A Classic Variant Pack also lets you replay the game in its original 2014 form.
End of game and scoring in Paperback 10th Anniversary
The game ends when the supply of Fame cards runs out (depending on the chosen mode's rules). Players then add up their Fame points: the one with the most becomes the most famous author and wins. Between optimising your deck and forming high-value words, every game rewards both strategy and wordcraft.
