Seljuk: Byzantium Besieged 1068-1071

Description

The Eastern Romans and the Seljuk Turks clash, leading to the Battle of Manzikert.

Anatolia, 1068. Romanos Diogenes has just ascended to the throne of the Eastern Roman Empire. At the gates of Anatolia, the Seljuk armies ravage the border cities and carry out regular raids. Between intrigues in Constantinople and a fragile military command, Romanos must quickly assemble an army capable of repelling Sultan Alp Arslan before the Empire collapses.

Seljuk: Byzantium Besieged 1068-1071, the fifth volume in the Levy & Campaign series designed by Volko Ruhnke, immerses players in the logistical and tactical challenges preceding the Battle of Manzikert.

Players take on the role of either the Eastern Romans or the Seljuks in an asymmetrical clash involving raids, sieges, and major military campaigns.

  • The Seljuks: large contingents of fast cavalry, experts in mounted archery and lightning raids, supported by tribes and vassals from Central Asia.
  • The Romans: infantry and heavy cavalry (Tagmata), supported by border garrisons (Themes) that must be used wisely to defend cities and provinces.
  • Uncertain alliances: some lords may change sides, upsetting the balance of power.

Contents:

  • 1 mounted map (65 × 56 cm)
  • 169 wooden pieces
  • 132 cards
  • 3 sheets of colored tokens
  • 17 Lord & Battle boards
  • 1 sheet of stickers for Lords
