As new first-year students at Hogwarts, players will be divided into two rival houses, each with its own prefect who knows the secrets of the school's legendary grid of mysterious cards.
On their turn, prefects give their team of students a clue consisting of a single word and a number indicating the number of cards associated with that word. Students must then follow these clues to explore Hogwarts by guessing the corresponding words and revealing one card at a time.
If they are correct, they can continue guessing words up to the number of times indicated. If they come across a rival house card, a dead end, a locked door, or another obstacle, their turn ends. Be careful not to get caught by the caretaker Argus Filch, as this will end the game and mark the victory of the rival house.
Each victory also earns their house points, which can be tallied across multiple game sessions in the House Cup.
Under the surface, this should feel very familiar to existing Codenames fans, at least mechanically. Codenames: Return to Hogwarts also adds new layers of strategic depth to the classic Codenames gameplay in the form of unique asymmetric abilities.
Each house has access to two powerful and distinct special abilities. These abilities were designed to significantly transform the fundamentals of Codenames, offering Muggles and wizards surprising new gameplay possibilities.
Since each game features two different Houses and each House will only use one of its two abilities, players can explore and play with a multitude of possible combinations! Play with words, images... or both!
