The objective remains the same as in the original game: send your assistants to explore the island, buy items and artifacts to strengthen your deck, and accumulate glory and research before the end of the game. This expansion takes the form of a mysterious crate washed ashore on the island, with no identified sender, discovered by the small animals that inhabit the game’s world.
Its uniqueness lies in its role as the final content addition to the series: it introduces all-new card effects, such as the ability to take advantage of a site already occupied by an opponent, gain an additional main action, or even move a site directly onto the board.
Setup involves shuffling the new Artifact and Object cards into the existing decks from the core game, then adding the two new exploration sites to the reserve used when setting up the game board. One site from the core game—the crashed plane—is also replaced with an updated and rebalanced version.
The flow of a turn remains unchanged: each player sends their assistants to available sites to gather resources, purchase items or artifacts, and advance their expedition along the research tracks. The new effects introduced by this expansion simply enrich the range of choices available each turn, without altering the overall structure of the game.
The endgame and victory conditions remain the same as in the core game: the game ends after a set number of turns, and players tally their glory points, their progress on the research track, and the value of their remaining resources. The new artifacts and items introduced by *The Surprise Cargo* allow players to approach this progression from new angles, particularly through effects that alter site occupancy or provide additional actions.
Designed to integrate with the Adventure Box, this expansion is primarily aimed at regular players who want to refresh their deck-building strategies without adding complex new rules.
Requires the core game.
