Oil Rock: Distant Regions, a promotional pack to expand the modular map
Oil Rock: Distant Regions is a small expansion pack for the economic management game Oil Rock, designed by Marco Piola Caselli and illustrated by Giovanni Calore and Klemens Franz, distributed in France and Belgium by Intrafin.
In the core game, players take on the roles of oil companies from the American industrial era that drill for, refine, and transport oil on a modular map consisting of twelve Region tiles numbered 1 through 12, each color-coded according to its operating cost.
This expansion adds three additional tiles, numbered 13 through 15—one for each of the game’s three colors (yellow, green, and blue)—to introduce new terrain configurations without disrupting the game’s overall balance.
Incorporating the “Distant Regions” Tiles into an Oil Rock Game
To incorporate “Distant Regions” into a game, simply shuffle the three new tiles with the region tiles from the core game, grouping them by color: the yellow tile goes into the pile of yellow tiles, the green tile into the pile of green tiles, and the blue tile into the pile of blue tiles. Once the tiles have been shuffled within each color group, players must randomly select one tile per color before setting up the game board.
This step ensures that the board layout varies from game to game, without ever knowing in advance which tiles of a given color will be available or not.
Impact of “Distant Regions” on Gameplay and Ending the Game
The addition of these three tiles does not change the victory conditions of Oil Rock: the game ends and is scored exactly as in the core game.
Their sole effect is to increase the variability of the game board, by multiplying the possible combinations of land to exploit and by renewing the interest in subsequent games for players who already own the core game.
