A medieval clash over possession of the Necronomicon
Cthulhu Crusades: Duel is set in a dark version of the Middle Ages, where two players fight to seize the Necronomicon held by their opponent. This Duel version specifically pits Christians against Saracens, both willing to summon the Old Ones to gain the upper hand.
The game's art, by Robert Altbauer, draws directly on the Bayeux Tapestry, creating a striking contrast between medieval authenticity and Lovecraftian tentacled horrors.
Siege, summoning, and sacrifice: the mechanics of Cthulhu Crusades: Duel
Cthulhu Crusades: Duel requires destroying three layers of "wall" cards protecting the enemy castle before attacking it, pitting sword values against shield values. The Village deck provides basic resources: soldiers, bowmen, gold, builders, and thieves.
Cultists allow players to summon eldritch monsters from the Cthulhu deck to devastate rival armies, while sacrifices offered to the Deep Ones at sea grant powerful resources, at the cost of an element of chance. The Siege deck, funded by gold and builders, lets players construct siege engines to breach walls more effectively.
The game ends the moment a castle falls: the first player to destroy all three of their opponent's walls and reach their castle seizes their Necronomicon and wins the game immediately.
