In 1939, Japan’s primary anti-tank weapon was the 37mm Type 94 quick-firing gun which served as both an anti-tank gun and an infantry support gun. The 37mm calibre anti-tank gun was common in Western armies at the outbreak of hostilities when most tanks were relatively thinly armoured. However, while the development of more capable armoured vehicles proceeded at a rapid pace in the European theatre, the Japanese were somewhat slow to recognise how far their tanks and anti-tank guns were falling behind.
