Earthrise, the trick-taking game about the Apollo 8 mission
Earthrise is a trick-taking game published by Kokorïn Games, designed by Perepau Llistosella and Eloi Pujadas. It is part of the "Flashback" series, dedicated to iconic historical photographs — here, the famous image of the Earth rising above the Moon's horizon, taken during the Apollo 8 mission in 1968. The game uses four themed suits (Apollo, Astronauts, Photograph, Alert) and stands out for a trick-taking system where the highest card doesn't automatically win every reward.
How to play Earthrise
The game is played over three rounds, representing the major stages of the mission (outward journey, orbit, return). It follows classic trick-taking rules, with one exception: Alert cards can be played at any time, even if you could follow the lead suit. Each trick is tied to a Maneuver objective shown on the board (play the lowest card, a specific number…): the player who meets this criterion wins a Maneuver token, regardless of who wins the trick. The second-highest player gets first pick of which cards from the trick to keep, with the trick winner taking the rest — collected Alert cards requiring penalty tokens to be taken. Accumulated Maneuver tokens can be spent on puzzle pieces, working toward recreating the Earthrise photo.
End of game and scoring in Earthrise
At the end of the three rounds, players tally their Honour points: value of collected cards, a bonus for completing the photo, remaining Maneuver tokens, and penalties from Alert tokens. The player with the most Honours is declared the winner, the most accomplished photographer and astronaut of the Apollo 8 mission.
