On June 3, 1864, three Union army corps launched a disorganized attack against the Confederates, who were well entrenched outside Cold Harbor. In just eight minutes, the attack ran out of steam. More than 7,000 federal soldiers littered the Virginia ground. A few minutes later, the order was given to renew the attacks, but at every level, from corps commander to captain, the orders were “followed” only by an intensification of mostly blind firing while remaining in position.
Grant declared, “I regret this attack more than any I have ever ordered.” Today, it seems more like the madness of World War I than part of Grant's victorious campaign to end the Civil War.
Not War But Murder covers the week-long operation that marked the end of Grant's 30-day campaign, which began at Wilderness. Like a bloody chess game, Grant and Lee made moves and counter-moves to get to this point, with Lee well aware that one misstep could end the war quickly.
Not War But Murder, by designer Michael Rinella, is his first foray into a battle of the American Civil War. This game includes a 56 cm by 86 cm map, 170 1.6 cm counters, and 12 pages of rules that include the designer's notes and optional rules.
