The Commune or Death is a short, challenging card game for one to two players that depicts the two months of intense conflict between the Communards and the government in Versailles during the Paris Commune of 1871.
You take on the role of one of these factions and fight for control of Paris. Throughout the game, you’ll need to win the hearts and minds of the French people while making numerous difficult decisions (when to focus on political influence or military dominance, how to optimize limited resources, etc.).
The game board features a military zone and a political zone.
These two zones are divided into several sections (political institutions, public opinion, Parisian neighborhoods, and the forts on the city’s outskirts). In addition to controlling military and political areas and fulfilling your objectives to score victory points, you’ll need to manage your momentum. Versailles must collaborate with the Prussian invader to build an army that will restore order to the capital. On the other hand, the Commune must build strong revolutionary momentum to ensure that the population remains mobilized after months of siege and food shortages.
The cards depict important figures or crucial events of the Paris Commune. You can use a card for its event, for its operational value (which allows you to place or remove influence cubes in a given area), to purchase an event discarded by your opponent, or to boost your momentum. After a maximum of three rounds, La Commune 1871 culminates in a Final Crisis where each player must play all the cards they set aside earlier in the game.
