Steak ’n’ Beans Coffee House
The tall blue-fronted building on Main Street is home to Steak ’n’ Beans, Redrock Falls’ most popular place to eat, drink, and listen. From dawn until well past midnight the smell of hot coffee, fried beef and simmering beans drifts out onto the boardwalk, drawing in miners, ranch hands, gamblers and anyone with a coin left in their pocket.
The place is run by Martha “Ma” Berrigan, a sharp-eyed widow with a ladle in one hand and a shotgun under the counter. She knows every face in town and exactly how much trouble it’s likely to bring with it. Deals are made over tin mugs of coffee, arguments are settled in the booths, and more than one bounty has been quietly negotiated while pretending to study the menu.
Upstairs are a few cramped rooms for those who need a bed and don’t ask questions, but it’s downstairs, over plates of steak and beans, that the real business of Redrock Falls gets done. If you want to hear what’s really going on in town, you don’t go to the marshal — you get a seat at Ma Berrigan’s counter and start listening.
