Better Letters begins with a 3 x 3 grid of word rule cards and grows larger in subsequent rounds (up to a 5 x 5 grid). Set up the game by shuffling and dealing nine word rule cards into a 3 x 3 grid in the centre of the playing area. Shuffle the personal objective cards and deal three to each player.
Each player will choose two to keep and discard the other. These cards must remain secret from the other players. Give all players six tokens of their colour.
You can start with any card and continue using the cards connected orthogonally. Write your words on your score sheet in the corresponding boxes.
All players must find up to three words before time runs out. When time is up, each player ensures they have at least one valid word on their list; this will be the word they submit for that round. Individual scoring begins and the game is played over five or six rounds, depending on the number of players.
