The westernmost beach, Utah, was a late addition to the invasion plan. The objective was to secure a beachhead on the Cotentin Peninsula and isolate it quickly, both to prevent the Germans from reinforcing the vital port of Cherbourg and to capture it as quickly as possible. The American amphibious assault was also supported by airborne landings. Part of the Five for Fighting PBG series.
