You will be sending builders or constructing buildings in each round. It is simple to play and explain, but every decision matters. There are multiple ways to gain points, and every move you make can progress you towards acquiring a score in more than one way.
When sending builders your main goal is of course to gather various resources that will help you in the construction phase, but at the same time try to create the longest connection between the cities, since it will give you additional points. Moreover - it depends on your speed - faster players that create connections of specific width will receive more points than slower ones.
