The gods are divided. Rome is lost. We must restore its glory! With the favor of the gods, we will lead our people to become the chosen tribe that will bring unity and strength back to the empire.

Gods of Rome is a competitive area control game that uses worker placement and card activation, and lasts around 60 minutes. Players each choose a tribe at the start of the game and must lead it to win the favor of the gods. On your turn, choose one of the following three actions:

  •         Visit a god: Earn a god's blessing token, which enables you to perform an enhanced action later in the game, and place a meeple of that god's color - which can also be a player's color - on the game board, in a slot of the same color.
  •         Activate a card: Place a token on an action space on your player board to add meeples to the board, move meeples and attack opponents. If you have a blessing token of the same color as the action slot, you can perform an enhanced action.
  •         Score: Advance on the victory track according to the territories you control in the regions corresponding to the gods you've visited, then clear all action boxes and remove your tokens from the gods' boxes. Special objectives change territory scores from one game to the next.

There are three checkpoints on the Favor Track, and as players earn favors, they advance on this track; if a player reaches a checkpoint, all players score points according to their relative position on the Favor Track, then advance to the checkpoint.

When a player reaches the third checkpoint, players score again, and the player with the highest overall score wins.

    Gods of Rome n’offre pas énormément de choix d’action, ce qui peut être perçu comme une qualité pour certains mais un défaut pour d’autres. J’ai bien apprécié l’aspect de choix de temple (lié à un joueur) et le (plus classique) choix d’action par emplacement (un peu comme dans Scythe). On remarque que le marquage de point peut être cyclique. En effet, un joueur parvenant à faire un décompte libère des emplacements sur les temples pour les autres. L’interaction est bien présente via le choix des temples et le principe de majorité!

    Gods of Rome reste assez accessible point de vue règles mais reste quand même assez exigeant dans sa maîtrise.

    A noter, pour ceux qui apprécient, qu’une variante offre la possibilité d’une asymétrie via les pouvoirs des Dieux!
