abyrinth Chronicles: A Cooperative Reimagining of Labyrinth in a 3D Campaign
Labyrinth Chronicles is a cooperative reimagining of the famous Labyrinth, designed by Max J. Kobbert—the original creator of the 1986 game—in collaboration with Jan Truchanowicz and Awaken Realms studio, for Ravensburger.
Players take on the roles of heroes exploring a three-dimensional labyrinth to gather resources and rebuild the magical village of Fairy Vale, which is threatened by marauding goblins and a dragon.
The game’s originality lies in its complete reimagining of the original concept: whereas the classic Labyrinth pitted players against one another on a flat board, Labyrinth Chronicles offers a cooperative, narrative-driven experience structured as a campaign, in which sealed mystery boxes are gradually opened to reveal new rules, miniatures, and scenarios as the game progresses.
Setup and Play of a Labyrinth Chronicles Session
Setting up a session involves assembling the three-dimensional board, selecting a scenario from the current campaign, and placing the hero, portal, and enemy miniatures (marauding goblins, dragon) on the board.
Players revisit the iconic Labyrinth mechanic: inserting a tile to shift an entire row of corridors, thereby altering the accessible paths—but this time, the walls actually unfold in 3D.
Each turn, players coordinate their movements to achieve common objectives—such as collecting crystals or thwarting the goblins’ actions—while advancing through the narrative specific to the mystery box opened for the current session.
Victory Conditions and End of Session
Each Labyrinth Chronicles scenario concludes with the collective success or failure of the objective set for that session, whether it’s retrieving a specific treasure or repelling a threat before the end of a set number of turns.
The choices made and the outcome achieved influence which mystery boxes will be opened next, causing the campaign to evolve from one game to the next. The game also retains the option to return to the classic competitive modes of Labyrinth and Master Labyrinth, where victory simply goes to the first player to collect all of their assigned treasures.
