The Kittens of Mont Saint Michel takes place in the same universe as The Cats of Mont Saint Michel, but focuses on the youth of its heroes: players take on the roles of four kittens—Léon, Adara, Nera, and Guy—who are training on the fortress island of Mont Saint-Michel shortly before the French Revolution.
The goal is to help the kittens grow by having them acquire Warrior Virtues such as courage, patience, skill, and integrity, in order to prepare them for a final showdown against an army of pests. The game’s originality lies in its “friendly sparring” mechanic between kittens, which replaces the actual battles of the main game with benevolent training that allows them to gain experience without violence.
The adventure unfolds in three chapters: in “Train Hard,” the kittens explore different locations on the Mountain to earn virtues and loot; in “The Quest,” they continue their training while searching for a hidden enemy; and finally comes “The Final Battle,” a more intense phase where they must defend the monastery against waves of invaders.
Players move their kittens between Location cards, engage in friendly competition to test their skills, and use twelve-sided dice to resolve combat and skill checks encountered throughout their exploration.
The final battle pits all the kittens against an army of pests seeking to invade the monastery, and success in this final phase determines the outcome of the adventure. The successes and discoveries accumulated over the first two chapters directly influence the kittens’ abilities during this decisive confrontation, thus rewarding the thorough exploration and diligent training from the previous chapters.
The team of kittens triumphs collectively if they manage to repel the invasion using the skills acquired throughout the game.
