Diables is inspired by the Mediterranean tradition of the “Ball de Diables,” a Catalan fire dance: players lead a “colla,” a neighborhood group, that participates in popular festivals called “correfocs” by coordinating dancers, drummers, and fireworks to impress the crowd.
The game’s originality lies in the combination of placing workers along a street route and rearranging cards on personal boards, with the position of each colla member determining which bonus combinations are activated each turn.
Setup involves placing the central board representing the festival route, as well as each player’s personal boards, on which the colla members’ cards are arranged. On their turn, a player places their workers—Diables or drummers—along the route to set off fireworks and activate the card combinations corresponding to their positions.
Spectators lining the street impose specific requirements regarding the types of firecrackers used, which must be met to score points, while the gradual improvement of the colla’s skills unlocks more powerful actions and allows players to manage the “Beasts”—gigantic pyrotechnic structures that offer significant score bonuses.
At the end of each round, players tally the points earned from their performances in front of the spectators, retrieve their workers, and prepare for the next festival.
The game ends after a number of rounds determined by the rules, and the prestige points accumulated throughout the various festivals determine the final ranking. The player who has earned the most prestige for their troupe wins the game and is crowned the region’s most spectacular fire troupe.
Includes stretch goals.
