The sense of smell: an essential sense

The sense of smell plays an essential role in human well-being. It brings pleasure when we taste a dish, smell a perfume and sometimes it brings back good memories. It can also alert us to certain dangers such as gas leaks, fire or spoiled food and plays an essential role in social relations. The sense of smell is therefore a very precious sense, and losing it can be disturbing in post-traumatic or post-viral aftermath. Olfactory sensitivity can present itself in different ways:
  •     Anosmia: loss of sense of smell. It can be total, transient or specific to an odor. It is estimated that 1 to 5% of the world population is anosmic.
  •     Hyposmia: corresponds to a decrease in olfactory performance both in terms of the perception threshold and in the confusion between odors.
  •     Fantosmia : is a matter of olfactory hallucinations without the presence of odorants.
  •     Normosmia : corresponds to the normal sense of smell of a healthy person.
  •     Hyperosmia : is very rare and corresponds to people who are very sensitive to odors.
  •     Agueusia: means that one has lost the sense of taste, a chemical sense like that of smell.
Moreover, the perception of an odor depends on multiple factors, independent of a pathology: culture, environment, hormonal state, satiety, hygrometry (we smell better in a humid environment), aging, etc...
