Avalon: The Riven Veil - Core Pledge

Description

Avalon: The Riven Veil, an Arthurian area-control game set in a fractured world

Avalon: The Riven Veil is set after the Battle of Camlann: Arthur has fallen, Mordred pursues him to the isle of Avalon, and the veil separating the mortal and magical worlds tears open. Each player controls an asymmetric faction — including the Knights of the Round Table or Mordred's Undead — deploying units across a modular map revealed through exploration. The area-control mechanic is paired with hand management via multi-use cards, used for both movement and combat. The game's distinctiveness lies in its mist-covered map, uncovered gradually by the players, which prevents any fixed opening strategy and forces each faction to adapt to the terrain as it is revealed.

Setup and gameplay of Avalon: The Riven Veil

Each player selects a faction along with its board, starting units, and Lord. The map of Avalon is assembled blind using mist tiles that players flip as they move, revealing regions, mythical creatures, and legendary artifacts such as Excalibur or the Holy Grail. The game unfolds over several rounds, commonly referred to as seasons, during which players alternate between movement, settlement, and combat actions. Battles rely on a push-your-luck system: each participant decides how far to commit their forces before risking defeat, keeping tension high without permanently sidelining a struggling player.

Victory conditions and end of game

The game ends after the final planned season, following a climactic confrontation that resolves accumulated tensions between factions. Players then tally victory points, earned through regional control, artifact possession, and faction-specific objectives. This multi-source scoring system encourages differentiated strategies rather than a single path to victory, letting each faction lean into territorial dominance or the pursuit of powerful relics according to its strengths.

Avalon: The Riven Veil - Core Pledge includes the Myths & Monsters Box, which adds a 5th player and all stretch goals.
