Crimes is a historical role-playing game set in the Belle Époque and rooted in the tradition of 19th-century classic, fantasy, and horror literature. In Crimes, this era is experienced by its characters as particularly painful: between anti-Semitism, colonial exploitation and the excesses of industrial society, not to mention the warmongering that is infecting the world, the sirens of a decadent universe are inexorably drawing humanity towards its ruin.
The Belle Époque is also a world torn between boundless optimism and apocalyptic melancholy: optimism driven by scientific advances, the ideals of the Republic and the promises of social revolutions to come, and melancholy in the face of humanity's inevitable decline, with no possible redemption.
Crime is the central theme of this game, whose founding principle is Decadence: according to this law, anyone responsible for a criminal act, whether a person, a society or a civilisation, must pay the price through progressive decline. Thus, the passions and deviances of the characters lead them inexorably towards their own hell: physical degeneration, madness or other curses.
Players take on the roles of characters involved in crime. Investigators, of course: police officers, peace officers, criminologists, forensic scientists, alienists... but also victims or members of various clubs, coteries and religious fraternities.
